Natural History Museum
Natural History Museum
It is located in an early-20th century mansion, next to the Parque del Centenario (Centennial Park). The building was originally the home of General Berlanga, and later on housed the Military Aviation School, the Military Nursing School and the Military Hospital. In July 1987, the City Council of Merida inaugurated the Natural History Museum in these premises. The museum’s exhibitions were remodeled and the place reopened in 1995.

City Museum
City Museum
Exhibits illustrating the development of Merida through history are displayed within the majestic walls of the former Federal Palace of Post and Telegraphs, a building of great architectural and historic relevance, which was inaugurated by General Porfirio Diaz in 1908. This French-style building witnessed Merida’s economic heyday in the early 20th century. It houses the City Museum since June 29th, 2007.

Yucatan Atheneum Museum of Contemporary Art ("El Macay")
Located next to Merida’s Cathedral, the MACAY features several halls for temporary exhibition of art pieces by both national and foreign artists. The MACAY also keeps a permanent exhibition of works by Yucatecan artists Gabriel Ramirez Aznar, Fernando Castro Pacheco and Fernando Garcia Ponce.

Canton Palace Museum
Canton Palace Museum
The Canton Palace Museum is located on famous Paseo de Montejo (Montejo’s Walk), between 41 Street and 43 Street, housed by a beautiful mansion built in the last years of Porfirio Diaz’s dictatorial presidency. This little palace is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city and was commissioned by General Francisco Canton Rosado, who lived in it until his death. The building’s sumptuous decoration includes marbles of different tonalities in its floors, walls and majestic stairway, as well as finely finished plaster moldings. The entire museum is devoted to Mayan archaeology and houses a collection of representative pieces from pre-Hispanic stages of this Mesoamerican civilization. The temporary exhibition room is devoted to displays of contemporary art and photography.

Museum of the Yucatecan Song
Trova music is considered part of the cultural heritage of the Yucatecan people. This museum is devoted to this kind of music and exhibits oil paintings and bronze statues of the foremost representatives of this musical genre: Ricardo Palmerin, Guty Cardenas, Cirilo Baqueiro Preve "Chancil", Ermilo Padron Lopez, Juan Acereto, Armando Manzanero and Pastor Cervera.

The museum also features old songbooks and original scores. The Museum of the Yucatecan Trova is located in the Mejorada district and offers weekly recitals of trios and romantic singers (locally called troubadours).

Yucatan Museum of National Folk Art
The Yucatan Museum of National Folk Art promotes and disseminates the diverse cultural expressions of Mexican ethnic groups, strengthens regional identity and revalues indigenous cultures as the axis and origin of our cultural heritage.

The museum currently houses 1800 pieces of Mexican Folk Art, belonging to two collections of popular, regional and national art and distributed over eight exhibition rooms. Prominent among them is the room devoted to peninsular Maya, where traditional costumes, ceramics, stone and woodcarvings, gold and silversmithing, traditional toys and musical instruments are displayed.

Dzibilchaltun Museum of the Maya People
Dzibilchaltun, the maya city whose name means “place where there is writing on the stones”, was one of the great urban centers that flourished in Northern Yucatan before the arrival of the Spaniards. This archaeological site is home to the Museum of the Maya People.

Gallery "Juan Gamboa Guzmán" Gallery "Juan Gamboa Guzmán"
The Picture Gallery “Juan Gamboa Guzman" contains works in Yucatán during the nineteenth century and the Viceroyalty. Focusing on painting, this museum is unique in this city. It was inaugurated in July 1981, in a historical monument of the XVII century that belonged to the Jesuit school, which was later raised to university. You can find oil paintings made during the Viceroyalty, by stressing the importance of the original image of the Izamal Virgin, whose story made the evangelization in Yucatan.

The greatest painter of Yucatan, Juan Gamboa Guzmán, presents in oil, The Celestial Music, his most prized work.

The museum has a gallery of portraits of prominent men and leaders in the history of Yucatan, players from the most important passages of the late nineteenth century, as the Caste War, the struggle against the empire and the sisal rise (the green oil). By Sculptor Enrique Gottdiener Soto, the Gallery presents bronze sculptures, which portray accurately the Yucatan rural of the last century, the author shows, an original and intense perspective of the Mayan culture, highlighting their physical characteristics, dress and customs.
