Life in Merida and the rest of Yucatan would not be the same without cenotes, those millennia-old underground rivers that entice visitors to seek adventures and to comfort their bodies by diving in. Not all cenotes are clear and adequate for a dip: some have been reserved by nature for wildlife, especially bats, and these are generally difficult to access and dangerous. In Merida’s surroundings and in the city itself, there are countless cenotes. One of the most beautiful is the open-air crystal-clear cenote in Dzibilchaltun. Legends, ballads and tales of heroic deeds resound amongst the humid walls of cenotes hidden from sunlight, and those who intend to access them require the help of an experienced guide. In ancient times, “Zuhuy Ha” (Maya for “virgin water”) was collected from cenotes and used in the preparation of food offerings for certain ceremonies. An example is the Cha Chaac rain request ritual, which requires “pure” water; that is, water that no one has ever laid eyes upon. |
